Epitalon: Benefits, Dosage, Side Effects, and How to Get It in 2026

Medically reviewed by the Rite Aid Health Team · Last updated June 16, 2026

Epitalon — also spelled epithalon — is a synthetic tetrapeptide and the flagship "longevity peptide." It was developed from epithalamin, an extract of the pineal gland.

It is studied largely in Russian research for telomerase activation, telomere lengthening, melatonin and circadian regulation, sleep, and longevity.

It is one of the 12 peptides the FDA removed from its Section 503A Category 2 list in April 2026, and one of seven peptides under formal advisory review on July 23–24, 2026. New to longevity peptides? Start with our peptide therapy guide.

What is Epitalon?

Epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide (a tetrapeptide) modeled on epithalamin, a natural extract of the pineal gland. The pineal gland regulates melatonin and the body's circadian rhythm.

The research program behind Epitalon — led largely by the Russian researcher Vladimir Khavinson — set out to reproduce the gland's regulatory effects in a defined synthetic molecule.

It is not FDA-approved as a drug in the United States. It is best known as the most prominent peptide in the longevity category.

Benefits and uses

What the research has examined — the bulk of it Russian research, with long-term human data limited:

  • Telomerase activation and telomere lengthening. The signature claim; research has reported that Epitalon activates telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomeres, the protective caps on chromosomes that shorten with age.
  • Melatonin and circadian regulation. Given its pineal-gland origin, it is studied for restoring melatonin rhythm and improving sleep.
  • Sleep. Investigated for sleep quality, consistent with its circadian effects.
  • Longevity. The overarching framing; studied in the context of aging and lifespan, including in animal models.

State the limit plainly: Epitalon has a dedicated longevity following built on Khavinson's research, but long-term, independently replicated human data is limited, and the telomerase findings have not been broadly confirmed in Western clinical trials.

How it works

Epitalon is thought to act on the pineal gland and on telomerase expression. The proposed mechanism has two strands: it appears to support the pineal gland's regulation of melatonin and circadian rhythm, and research has reported that it activates telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds telomeres.

Telomere shortening is a hallmark of cellular aging, so telomerase activation is the basis for the longevity claim. The mechanism is better characterized in research models than in independently replicated human studies.

Dosage and administration

Epitalon is administered by subcutaneous injection and is often run in short cycles rather than continuously — a pattern reflecting the cyclical protocols used in its research history. There is no FDA-approved Epitalon product and no official dosing guideline. Dosing should be set by a prescribing provider.

Side effects and safety

Epitalon is generally reported to be well tolerated, with few reported adverse effects in its research history and mild injection-site reactions the most commonly mentioned. Long-term human safety data is limited. Anyone using Epitalon should work with a provider and establish a baseline.

How to get Epitalon in 2026

The regulatory status changed this year:

  • For several years Epitalon sat on the FDA's Section 503A Category 2 list, which effectively blocked compounding pharmacies from preparing it.
  • On April 15, 2026 the FDA removed Epitalon (and 11 other peptides) from that Category 2 list.
  • A Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee meeting on July 23–24, 2026 will evaluate whether Epitalon should be formally added to the authorized bulk-substances list compounding pharmacies can use.

Until that process completes, the cleanest legal route is a prescription filled by a licensed compounding pharmacy. Products sold online "for research use only" are not manufactured or quality-controlled for human use, and buying them carries both quality and legal risk.

Epitalon vs other longevity peptides

Epitalon is the anchor of the longevity category and is often run alongside other peptides in anti-aging protocols. It is grouped with MOTS-c, the mitochondrial-derived metabolic peptide, Semax for cognitive support, and DSIP for sleep.

For protocol context, compare Epitalon with other anti-aging and longevity peptides.

Blood work to track Epitalon

Epitalon doesn't have a single direct biomarker for its longevity claims, so tracking focuses on a general age-and-vitality baseline and safety:

  • Men's Anti-Aging Test (Light) — a general baseline of the hormones and markers relevant to vitality and aging.
  • Comprehensive metabolic profile — liver enzymes and kidney function, the safety baseline for any peptide cycle.

Establish a baseline before you start and re-test after a cycle.

Check safety and response markers before starting. These tests help establish a baseline for liver, kidney, glucose, hormone, and recovery tracking.

FAQ

Studied for telomerase activation and telomere lengthening, melatonin and circadian regulation, sleep, and longevity. It is the flagship longevity peptide. Most of the evidence is Russian research, and long-term independently replicated human data is limited.

They are two spellings of the same peptide. "Epithalon" reflects its origin in epithalamin, the pineal-gland extract it was modeled on.

Epitalon is given by subcutaneous injection, often in short cycles rather than continuously. There is no FDA-approved product or official dosing. Dosing should be set by a prescribing provider.

Research, largely from Russian studies, has reported telomerase activation and telomere effects. These findings have not been broadly confirmed in independent Western clinical trials, so the claim should be treated as research-stage rather than established.

Few adverse effects are reported in its research history, with mild injection-site reactions the most commonly mentioned. Long-term human safety data is limited.
