Lichen Sclerosus Symptoms Quiz

Curated by doctors Free

Itchy, pale, fragile skin around the genitals or anus can cause soreness, tearing or tightness. Describe whichever area is affected, including the vulva, penis, foreskin or skin around the anus. Symptoms can affect one site. An examination, and sometimes a small skin sample called a biopsy, helps distinguish possible causes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this quiz, what it covers, and what your results mean.

Health education only. Symptom totals cannot diagnose lichen sclerosus or estimate its likelihood. Being unable to pass urine or having severe painful swelling needs urgent care now. A persistent ulcer, lump or thickened patch needs prompt clinician review, even when other symptoms are mild.

Lichen sclerosus is a skin condition that can cause itchy, pale or white, fragile patches. It often affects genital skin or the skin around the anus and may cause soreness, tearing or scar-related tightness.

Adults of any sex can develop it. Genital or perianal symptoms may affect one area without affecting all nearby sites, so describe the location rather than assuming symptoms must be widespread.

The cause is not fully understood. Itching or a pale patch alone cannot establish why the skin has changed; a clinician can examine the area and distinguish possible causes.

Lichen sclerosus is not caused by poor hygiene and is not a sexually transmitted infection. Genital symptoms are not a reason for blame, and other possible causes should be assessed without assumptions about sexual behavior.

Note itching, pale or white patches, fragile skin, soreness, small cracks or tears, and new tightness. Record where they occur, whether they persist or recur, and how they affect sleep or ordinary activities.

A clinician examines the affected skin and reviews the symptoms. Sometimes a small skin sample, called a biopsy, is needed to distinguish lichen sclerosus from other causes. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A biopsy is a small sample of affected skin. A clinician may recommend it when an examination needs clarification or a persistent change needs further assessment. Symptoms and a general blood panel cannot establish what a pale, fragile or thickened patch represents.

No. Normal general blood tests do not rule out lichen sclerosus or explain a persistent skin change. A skin examination matters more than a blood panel for assessing pale, fragile, fissured or tight skin.

Fragile skin can tear or become sore with rubbing, including during sexual contact. Similar discomfort can have other causes, so discuss recurring pain or tearing with a clinician rather than assuming a diagnosis.

Scar-related tightness can occur. If applicable to your anatomy, describe changes in vulval skin or how the foreskin moves during usual care. Do not force tight skin to move; arrange assessment for a new or persistent change.

Arrange prompt clinician review. Such a change needs examination even if itching is mild or other symptoms improve. Do not wait for a general blood panel to decide whether to seek care.

If you cannot urinate or have severe painful swelling, seek urgent medical care now and go to an emergency department. Mild stinging while urine passes normally is different, but ongoing stinging still deserves clinical review.
