Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this quiz, what it covers, and what your results mean.

Health education only. Symptom totals cannot diagnose lichen planus or estimate its likelihood. A clinician examines the affected areas and may recommend a biopsy. Mouth pain that prevents drinking, severe genital or urinary pain, or inability to pass urine needs urgent care now. Testing must not delay care.

Lichen planus is a condition that can affect the skin, mouth, genitals, scalp and nails. It may cause itchy raised skin lesions or white lines and sore areas in the mouth. A clinician needs to examine the affected areas to establish the diagnosis.

Changes involving the skin, mouth, nails, scalp or genitals can help a clinician plan an examination. Symptoms can occur at one site or several, and changes in different places do not necessarily have the same cause.

No. The color of affected skin can vary with skin tone. Describe whether an area is raised, itchy, painful or changing rather than relying on color alone.

Appearance alone cannot establish the cause of a skin or mouth change. Medication history may be relevant, so share the timing of any medicines started or changed. Do not assume a medicine is responsible or stop it without speaking with a clinician.

Mention itchy raised skin lesions, white lines or sore areas in the mouth, and any persistent changes involving the nails, scalp or genitals. Describe when each change began and whether it affects sleep, eating or daily comfort. Symptoms at every site are not required.

A clinician examines the affected areas and sometimes takes a small tissue sample called a biopsy. Symptoms and appearance alone may not distinguish lichen planus from other causes.

Normal general blood results cannot exclude lichen planus or explain a persistent skin or mouth lesion. A clinician examines the affected sites and may recommend a biopsy. Any other testing is chosen to answer a specific clinical question.

Bring a list of prescription and nonprescription medicines, when each was started, and any recent dose or schedule changes. Note when symptoms began in relation to those changes. Timing alone does not prove a medicine caused the symptoms, and you should not stop or change medicines on your own.

Oral lichen planus may cause burning or sore areas, as well as white lines. Other causes are possible, so persistent mouth symptoms need examination. Seek urgent medical care now if painful lesions prevent you from drinking.

Adults of any sex can have genital symptoms. Describe the anatomy affected, such as the vulva, vaginal opening, penis or other genital skin. Symptoms at a single site deserve assessment and do not need to accompany skin or mouth changes.

A persistent oral ulcer needs assessment, even without changes elsewhere. Persistent skin, nail, scalp or genital changes also deserve an examination to establish their cause. Do not rely on a normal general blood panel for reassurance about these symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care now if painful mouth lesions prevent drinking or genital or urinary pain is severe. Go to an emergency department now if you cannot pass urine despite needing to. Blood testing and routine appointments must not delay urgent assessment.
