Rogaine
Over-the-counterWhat is Rogaine?
Rogaine is an over-the-counter treatment that helps regrow hair and slow hair loss. The active ingredient is minoxidil, a medication originally developed to treat high blood pressure. Doctors discovered that minoxidil caused hair growth as a side effect, leading to its development as a topical hair loss treatment.
You apply Rogaine directly to your scalp where you want hair to grow. It comes in liquid and foam forms with different strengths for men and women. The medication works best for people experiencing gradual hair thinning on the top of the head.
Rogaine does not cure baldness or work for everyone. It takes at least 4 months of daily use to see results. If you stop using it, any hair you regrew will likely fall out within a few months.

Common uses
- Male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia
- Female pattern hair loss at the top of the scalp
- Hair thinning on the crown and vertex areas of the head
- Slowing the progression of hereditary hair loss
How it works
Rogaine widens blood vessels in your scalp, which increases blood flow to hair follicles. This brings more oxygen and nutrients to the follicle cells. The improved blood supply helps reactivate shrunken hair follicles and extends the growth phase of the hair cycle.
Hair grows in cycles with growth, rest, and shedding phases. Rogaine prolongs the growth phase and makes hair follicles larger. This produces thicker, longer strands. The medication works best on newer hair loss where follicles are still alive but weakened.

Dosage information
Men typically use 5% minoxidil foam or solution twice daily. Women usually use 2% minoxidil solution twice daily or 5% foam once daily. Apply 1 milliliter of solution or half a capful of foam to dry scalp and affected areas. Wash your hands after applying. Do not exceed the recommended dose, as more medication does not improve results.
Side effects
- Scalp irritation, itching, or redness
- Unwanted facial hair growth if product drips
- Temporary increased hair shedding during first 2 to 8 weeks
- Dry or flaky scalp
- Changes in hair color or texture
Stop using Rogaine and seek medical attention if you experience chest pain, rapid heartbeat, swelling of hands or feet, sudden unexplained weight gain, or dizziness. While rare, minoxidil can be absorbed through the skin and affect your heart or blood pressure.
Drug interactions
- Other topical products on the scalp may increase absorption and side effects
- Blood pressure medications may interact if minoxidil is absorbed systemically
- Corticosteroids applied to the scalp may increase minoxidil absorption
- Not recommended for people with heart conditions without doctor approval
- Do not use if you have unexplained hair loss, sudden patchy hair loss, or scalp infections
Blood test monitoring
While Rogaine is available without a prescription, people with certain health conditions should monitor their blood pressure while using it. The medication can occasionally be absorbed into your bloodstream and affect your cardiovascular system. If you have existing heart problems or high blood pressure, consider getting regular blood pressure checks. Rite Aid offers blood testing services that can track important health markers. Although specific blood tests are not typically required for Rogaine use, monitoring overall health helps ensure the medication is safe for you.

Frequently asked questions
Most people need at least 4 months of twice-daily use to see any results. Some people notice improvement at 2 months, while others need 6 months or longer. Peak results typically occur after 1 year of consistent use. If you see no improvement after 4 months, the medication may not work for your type of hair loss.
No, Rogaine is available over the counter at Rite Aid and other pharmacies. You can purchase it without seeing a doctor. However, it is a good idea to consult a healthcare provider if you are unsure about the cause of your hair loss or have underlying health conditions.
Hair that regrew with Rogaine will likely fall out within 3 to 4 months after you stop. The medication does not permanently change your hair follicles. You need to continue using it indefinitely to maintain results. This is an important consideration before starting treatment.
Women are typically advised to use 2% minoxidil solution or 5% foam once daily. Men usually use 5% products twice daily. Women who use higher strengths or more frequent applications may experience unwanted facial hair growth. Always follow the label directions for your gender.
Increased shedding during the first 2 to 8 weeks is normal and expected. Rogaine pushes out old, thin hairs to make room for new growth. This is called a shedding phase and is a sign the medication is working. The shedding should stop and new hair will grow in.
Rogaine is only approved for use on the scalp. Using it on your face may cause unwanted side effects or skin irritation. The medication has not been tested for safety or effectiveness on other body areas. Talk to a healthcare provider about other options for beard or eyebrow growth.
Routine blood tests are not required for healthy people using Rogaine. However, if you have heart problems or high blood pressure, your doctor may want to monitor you. Regular blood pressure checks help ensure the medication is not affecting your cardiovascular system. Rite Aid offers testing services that can track your overall health markers.
Both forms contain minoxidil and work similarly. The foam dries faster and may cause less scalp irritation. The liquid is less expensive but can make hair look greasy. Choose based on your preference and how your scalp reacts to each formula.
Yes, you can dye, perm, or style your hair normally while using Rogaine. However, apply your hair treatments first and make sure your scalp is healthy before applying Rogaine. Wait for your scalp to return to normal if you experience irritation from chemical treatments.
Rogaine works best for hereditary pattern baldness on the crown and top of the head. It does not work for hair loss caused by medications, medical conditions, scarring, or sudden patchy hair loss. See a healthcare provider to determine the cause of your hair loss before starting treatment.
